Hiking Trails in Grand Canyon that are NOT Touristy

Some of you requested a seminar about hikes in Grand Canyon that are NOT Rim to Rim (or on what are called Corridor Trails). Here it is so you all better show up:) We will discuss some of the best trails for day hiking and backpacking that are more off-the-beaten-path so you will see fewer people and have some added challenges to the trip as well. We will also discuss what to expect as far as challenges, season and permitting to help you pick the right trail for you.

This is a free event!

Preparing for a Rim to Rim in a Day Hike

Join us for our most popular seminar (we should probably start charging for this;). Anyway, Rim to Rim season is here and time is running out to get this done for the Fall and many of you may be contemplating your first, or tenth Rim to Rim day hike. Let the experts - that would be us because we hike Grand Canyon so many times that we have run out of toes and fingers to count. Let us give you some tips about trying to get prepared, what to bring for food and drink, proper footwear and clothing, what to expect (climate, trail, other people, etc.) and how to hopefully make it through in one piece. Since we are at the end of Rim to Rim season, this will be the last seminar for Rim to Rim until 2019.

This is a free event but we do ask you to RSVP in advance.

Please bring pen and paper - there will be no handouts

It's almost time to get the ever coveted Grand Canyon permits for Spring (November 1st is the deadline for March) and it doesn't hurt to start planning now because it's a pain in the butt. Learn all the tricks of the trade from people that have to go through the convoluted Grand Canyon permit system on a monthly (sometimes daily) basis. Since Just Roughin' It is a Grand Canyon guide service, we know and sympathize with the challenges of getting a permit. We will also discuss some other planning tips like logistics for a Rim to Rim, alternatives to the main trails, off-season tips, what to expect when on your trip (like the flesh-eating Grand Canyon Rock Squirrels) and more!

Leave No Trace - Tips on Keeping the Great Outdoors Unscathed

You will learn the 7 principles of Leave No Trace all in one packed hour of fun! This class will be taught by a LNT Master Educator. Class highlights are, but not limited to, respecting wildlife like bunnilopes and sasquatches, how to be considerate of others in the backcountry, how to dispose of trash and waste properly, and maybe a bit about how not to get lost - your corpse left in the backcountry would be leaving a trace. Also, we will discuss some modern rules about leaving no trace for social media - yep, that is now a thing.

This class is free but we do ask you to RSVP no less than 24 hours in advance.

Bring a pen and notebook if you like to take notes.

10 Essentials for Desert Hiking

Desert hiking season is upon us - yeah! That means we will be heading out to the desert for some hiking - Superstitions, Sonoran Preserve, Tucson area, Saguaro NP, etc. So to get you prepared (or as a refresher) we will discuss the 10 essential pieces of gear you need for any desert hiking or backpacking trip (plus a few honorable mentions). Plus, we will talk about those items that you may think you need, but really don't so you can leave those behind and save a little space and weight.

Get Out & Learn Some Backpacking Skills - For the Girls!

Are you ready to learn some off the grid skills? The best way - turn off your phone, grab a pack, get your legs moving and come out to the Superstition Wilderness with us for an overnight to learn some amazing skills that will help you get off the grid more often - with friends or family. We will show you some outdoors skills like map reading, Leave No Trace principles, camp set up, packing light, but with essentials (and comfort), etc. If you are already a skilled backpacker, you may learn a tip or two. First Aid Fun! Blister Care, Ankle Taping & Slings

It's hiking season so let's learn some essential backcountry (and front country) first aid skills! We have already put in the time to learn this stuff and we want to share some knowledge so you have some skills in the event of an emergency - whether for yourself, a friend or a perfect stranger needing a helping hand. We will show you how to tape an ankle, make a splint and most importantly - blister care! While this is a not a certification class, it will be taught by a certified Wilderness First Responder. Trust us, while we hope you never have to use what you learn, it's better to be prepared with the knowledge.

There is a $10/person fee for this class to cover the materials - athletic tape, slings, bandages. etc. To save on transaction fees, we just ask you pay upon arrival at the event (cash or credit). This also means there is no cancellation fee, but do please let us know 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend. Please arrive 15 minutes early to pay and sign waivers - just in case we want a real life scenario and need to break an arm or two.

Staying Warm on Your Camping Trip

You asked, we answered! How do I stay warm at night on my camping/backpacking trip? This hour seminar will give you tips to stay warm for various scenarios - when you have to keep your gear light on a backpacking trip, when you cannot have a campfire, when temperatures drop below expected, snow, and when you aren't expecting to be out overnight. While it is not too cold out in the Phoenix area yet, Fall is approaching and our nighttime temperatures will be dropping in the outskirts of the city sooner than we think.

This is a free event - yeah!

We have a lot of great gear for hiking, camping and backpacking, plus some of the best brands in outdoor clothing and footwear so you can go on a hike, climb a rock or two and then grab a cocktail (or beer) - we are more of the cocktail types but you can't go wrong with a great local brew!  We are local owned and operated (this means we are not a franchise either) by a AZ native. We know, AZ natives are hard to find. Established in 2006 as a guide service in Grand Canyon, Havasupai and Yosemite, we know what the deal is with the best gear for the outdoors - whether out for the day or in the middle of nowhere for a week.  So come on in a say hey!  And since you are coming by, if you don't mind bringing us a cocktail (or beer), that would be super cool as well.

And now that you made it to our store page, you need to make it to our store! Mention the code GETOUT and you will recieve 20% off one regulary priced item (and yes, restrictions apply).
