Getting ready for your first - or next, backpacking trip? Well, don't go in with too much, or too little stuff! We will spend an hour discussing what you should bring on your trip and how to pack it. You are more that welcome to bring some things to get our thoughts as to whether or not you need it - but we don't want to see your drawers, so leave those at home! Get Out & Learn Some Backpacking Skills - For the Girls!

Are you ready to learn some off the grid skills? The best way - turn off your phone, grab a pack, get your legs moving and come out to the Superstition Wilderness with us for an overnight to learn some amazing skills that will help you get off the grid more often - with friends or family. We will show you some outdoors skills like map reading, Leave No Trace principles, camp set up, packing light, but with essentials (and comfort), etc. If you are already a skilled backpacker, you may learn a tip or two. Or, maybe you know it all but just need some people to back pack with. Regardless, there is always a good reason to get out and backpack with other fun people. You will be with a Wilderness First Responder trained female guide to show you the ropes and also provide you with a sense of security. We have yet to lose anyone, but it is on our bucket list. Oh, and this one is for the girls - so ladies only.

Orientation - October 19th
Meet at JRI at 5pm the night before the overnight backpacking trip to go over packing list, proper packing, pack fitting, proper clothing, logistics, meals, and to ask questions.

Days 1 and 2 - October 20th & 21st
We will meet at the JRI store at 7am and then drive to the trailhead (TBD). Over the course of the 2 days we will learn Leave No Trace principles, map and compass skills, cooking and the other fun things you can do in the great outdoors. At the very least, you will get to spend a couple days with like-minded people who want to get of the grid for a couple days, sweat a little and get ready for the next adventure!

There is a fee for this event - $150/person and must be paid in full in order to save your space and is fully refundable up to 72 hours before the date of the orientation (5 pm on October 19th). If you book your space within 72 hours before the date of the orientation, your payment will be non-refundable.

First Aid Fun! Blister Care, Ankle Taping & Slings

It's hiking season so let's learn some essential backcountry (and front country) first aid skills! We have already put in the time to learn this stuff and we want to share some knowledge so you have some skills in the event of an emergency - whether for yourself, a friend or a perfect stranger needing a helping hand. We will show you how to tape an ankle, make a splint and most importantly - blister care! While this is a not a certification class, it will be taught by a certified Wilderness First Responder. Trust us, while we hope you never have to use what you learn, it's better to be prepared with the knowledge.

There is a $10/person fee for this class to cover the materials - athletic tape, slings, bandages. etc. To save on transaction fees, we just ask you pay upon arrival at the event (cash or credit). This also means there is no cancellation fee, but do please let us know 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend. Please arrive 15 minutes early to pay and sign waivers - just in case we want a real life scenario and need to break an arm or two.

Staying Warm on Your Camping Trip

You asked, we answered! How do I stay warm at night on my camping/backpacking trip? This hour seminar will give you tips to stay warm for various scenarios - when you have to keep your gear light on a backpacking trip, when you cannot have a campfire, when temperatures drop below expected, snow, and when you aren't expecting to be out overnight. While it is not too cold out in the Phoenix area yet, Fall is approaching and our nighttime temperatures will be dropping in the outskirts of the city sooner than we think.

This is a free event - yeah!

Nutrition for the Outdoor Athlete

Let's learn how what you eat affects your performance! Debbie Hendricks has almost 20 years experience in the fitness industry, training athletes and weekend warriors alike and currently teaches Exercise Science at Mesa Community College. Anyway, she is going to discuss how to make the best choices for your active lifestyle to make sure you are at your best - especially when out in the backcountry because when you are not properly fueled, you are not in a place for an easy rescue. In other words, "hitting the wall" in the middle of nowhere is not ideal. We will get sciencey about how carbs, protein and fats work, what is best for your outing and what is best for recovery. But we don't like to just tell you what. We are all about the WHY.

This is not a seminar about diets, what exactly to eat, etc. This is about the basics of food and how it affects performance.

This is a free seminar and we promise it will be way more exciting than is sounds because science is fun!

We have a lot of great gear for hiking, camping and backpacking, plus some of the best brands in outdoor clothing and footwear so you can go on a hike, climb a rock or two and then grab a cocktail (or beer) - we are more of the cocktail types but you can't go wrong with a great local brew!  We are local owned and operated (this means we are not a franchise either) by a AZ native. We know, AZ natives are hard to find. Established in 2006 as a guide service in Grand Canyon, Havasupai and Yosemite, we know what the deal is with the best gear for the outdoors - whether out for the day or in the middle of nowhere for a week.  So come on in a say hey!  And since you are coming by, if you don't mind bringing us a cocktail (or beer), that would be super cool as well.

And now that you made it to our store page, you need to make it to our store! Mention the code GETOUT and you will recieve 20% off one regulary priced item (and yes, restrictions apply).
