Going on Just Roughin' It Half Dome backpakcing & camping guided hiking trip is a once in a life time experience.  For three days we’ll guide you on a hike to the famous and most popular location within Yosemite National Park - Half Dome.  Hiking to Half Dome is so popular, even day hikers have to have a permit to hike the monolith, limiting the numbers of people hiking the great monolith.  The difficulty of this hike increases significantly with your day hike up Half Dome.

Our Half Dome hike takes you off the beaten path to enjoy some less visited areas of the park - this means no paved trail where you might run into someone on a Segway and real hikers versus all the lookey-loos. It also means more time to experience the serenity of Yosemite and see the places not on Instagram. You will then notice the contrast by night two when we camp at Little Yosemite Valley with everybody else.

*Route Variation - Our specific hiking route and campsites on each departure are dependent upon permit availability. Difficulty of the hike will also vary based on the route change. Additionally, the ascent up Half Dome is very challenging and is
weather permitting.

**Shuttle - this trip starts along Glacier Point Rd. If you do not have your own transportation and are taking YARTS, you will need to reserve space on the early (8:30am) Glacier Point Tour shuttle. Spaces are limited and there is a fee.

Day 1

After we meet the group, we head for the shuttle for our ride to the Mono Meadow trailhead. We hike about 3.4 miles to Illilouette Creek for a night of camping off the beaten path to see Yosemite without all the people. Once at camp, there are some trails to explore for those wanting some additional hiking. Or, kick back by the fire and wait for the fire stomping Rhinos to show up. (That's a joke. There are no fire stomping Rhinos in Yosemite).

Day 2

Today we pack up and move camp to the Little Yosemite Valley. Expect camp to have 50+ people but there is an option to get away from the people by hiking a bit further and camp away from everyone. The hike today is approximately 7 miles. Once at camp, take a dip in the Merced River or take a side hike up the Merced River to Bunnell Cascade and Moraine Dome. Tomorrow is a long day up Half Dome, so best to get some rest!

Day 3

We get up for an early breakfast to ascend Half Dome before all the day hikers - enjoying the sunrise and the area before the crowds arrive, invading your views and tranquility. After the Half Dome hike (6.6 miles), we pack up and head for Glacier Point. It is a beautiful 7 mile hike along the Panorama trail to get outstanding views of Half Dome, Nevada Falls, and the surrounding area before you say goodbye to Yosemite.

An excellent three day hike with an excellent guide - Joe Keyser. Wildfires meant that our original route wasn't possible but Joe managed to get backpacking permits allowing us to approach Half Dome past Lower Sunrise Lake (where we camped) and Clouds Rest (which we walked up to get great panoramic views).
Our itinerary meant we had two possible windows for ascending Half Dome and thundery rain showers in the first window led us to postpone to the following morning. Next day we were up and away from Little Yosemite early so that we were on the summit of Half Dome by mid morning.
Looking back at the whole trip, the only thing I'd change would be for me to have done training hikes with a fully loaded 75L pack - not with just a small day pack!
Overall a really excellent trip which we won't forget!!

Amazing!! My first multiple day backpack trip and it was great. The guide Chad was fabulously patient, helpful, encouraging, and fun. I almost bailed out on going up the cables but Chad just gave just the right nudge of encouragement and next thing I knew I was on top of the world!!! A huge feat for someone with a fear of heights. Ten Stars for Just Roughin' It. Thank you for an unforgettable adventure :)

We recently completed our June 12-14th, 2016 Half Dome Trip with our guide Dallan Caldwell. We couldn't be more pleased with the services provided. Our guide Dallan was skilled, good company and a good cook. The equipment provided was in good condition and good quality. Getting to backpack and camp two nights was an item on my bucket list. Half Dome was a great destination for this experience. Doing a three day trip to Half Dome took all the stress and worry of, "Can I make it in one day". Doing it over three days made the experience really enjoyable. When we approached the last 1/4 of the hike to Half Dome, and I saw the cable walk, I chicken out. I was really afraid and decided to wait it out while the others in our group made it to the top. But Dallan, our guide, really encouraged me to try it, saying he knew I could do it. He said at least try, and if you can't do it, I'll help you down. So off we went, and I made it all the way to the top of Half Dome. Dallan was there every step of the way, with advise and encouragement. This trip will always be one of my best life adventures. The only bummer was the rain, which is always a possibility of hiking in the Sierras. We hiked the last two miles to camp in the rain. Once there, Dallan put up a tarp for us to get out of the rain while he set up camp and then cooked dinner for us. I would recommend to make sure you have good soled shoes, as the 1/4 mile path to Half Dome is pretty smooth. Also, make sure to have full finger gloves with gripping stuff of the fingers for the cables. I am looking forward to other adventure with Just Roughin It. The cost to me was worth it to have an experienced guide and good equipment.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lucy Green was GREAT!!!!!!!! She saved my life!!!! I had a blister on my foot that you could almost see and she fixed it. :) It was a wonderful time and we would recommend to anyone.

It was like a 5 star hotel that smelled really bad. My wife said it was me.

My wife and I really worked hard to get ready for the 3 days of hiking with backpacks and Lucy took great care of us.

We look forward to doing another backpacking trip with Just Roughing It. We are sure that all your guides are very good, since you trained them and Lucy, but we would want Lucy again.

I am so glad that we did this trip with Just Roughing It. It would have been really roughing it without your program to take such good care of everything.

I cannot imagine doing another big hike without .

I didn't have to worry about anything. I just had to enjoy the experience and I did.

Thanks again and Thanks!!!!! LUCY!!!!!

Just finished the 3 day Half Dome trip with our guide Lucy Green. Lucy was outstanding, treated us like royalty and was very knowledgeable and helpful the whole trip. The food was great and the gear provided made the trip comfortable. Value of the experience was well worth the cost. Thanks Lucy!

This was an experience above the ordinary - made even memorable by two great guides Lucy and Ryan and some excellent organisation by Just Roughin It.

Having made the trip from Europe to do this hike, I had high expectations - I wasn't let down. The scenery is literally breathtaking and more than enough to take your mind off the tough terrain and demanding conditions. The highlight is of course the Half Dome itself - a tough and slightly nerve jangling climb but our guides wisely ensured we were readyto tackle the cables by 1030 in the morning, missing the crowds (it was July) and enjoying a less stressy ascent.

The trek back down to the valley following the Mist Trail was also amazing - around every corner was a fantastic view and the cool mists and rainbows from the falls set the seal on a memorable hike.

I would not hesitate to use JRI again or recommend their services - their expertise and skills are essential for a succesfull Half Dome ascent and from start to finish, my enquiries and indeed the whole process have been dealt with professionally and courteously.

Enjoy the hike.....'cos I know you're gonna do it!

This was fantastic trip. Everything was so well organized from p/u on day 01 to drop off at the end of the trip. Beautiful surroundings, great weather, a challenging hike.

Highlights
The guide, James, was fantastic, laid back but very knowledgable. He let the group set the pace and pointed out great vistas to break at along the trail. He was obviously very familiar with the trail.
Small groups - we had 5 + guide which was great. Allowed for bonding among member of the group
The gear was top knotch, clean, good quality tents easy to assemble
The drivers to and from Yosemite were entertaining and on time. Had a great conversation with John on the way back!

Suggestions
Consider extra guide/cook to hike ahead and cook meals at campsite
Allow hikers to eat snack in the vehicle on the way to the park. Not being able to eat was annoying to the entire group.

In summary
Amazing trip - life changing really
Will recommend trip and company/guide to all friends
Would like to book another trip with James and bring my family this time.

Just wanted to let you know that Sandy and I both enjoyed our hike to the top of Half Dome. It was the best vacation experiences that I've ever had. Also, our guide, Jonathan was great.

Am back from Australia and wanted to write when I had a bit of time after my travels.

The trip was fantastic and James in particular was really amazing to meet and travel with. He is so knowledgeable, helpful friendly, patient and encouraging. The trip itself was well designed. I tipped him well (I think, I'm new to the tipping game) and just want to let you know he is a real asset to your company and you should definitely treat him well. He is the reason why I would recommend this trip to others.

I know my fellow travelers thought that the inclusion of a 67 yr old grandmother (who was sick) was a bit frustrating in terms of hiking at a quick pace but the truth was that one of the other travelers was a triathlete so I fit somewhere in the middle of those 2 extremes, and frankly enjoyed taking the time to savour the scenery. The food provided was excellent - although I didn't enjoy the peanut butter and jelly sandwich (it was my first time) but hey - I got to try one so that was exciting!! The equipment was top notch and has already inspired me to go out and buy more equipment.

All and all I would recommend the experience and wold definitely consider going on other trips with your company in other areas when I get there next.

I had a great time on the Half Dome trip. I'll Facebook friend you and you're welcome to look at my Yosemite pictures and put any you like on your page.

Things I liked most:
Round trip transportation to and from the hotel near the airport (not having to rent a car was a HUGE factor in why I selected this company); having the gear and food provided and included in the cost; having the group size capped.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I will certainly recommend your company to friends and hope to tale another trip soon. I wish I was able to leave the east coast so that I could work for you guys...it's really a neat operation you have going.

Thanks for a great trip!
