South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel

print

The South Kaibab to Bright Angel Loop backpacking trip is among the most popular Grand Canyon hikes. (Kaibab is pronounced KY-bab where KY rhymes with Eye and bab rhymes with cab - for those of you who aren't big on sounding like a tourist).  Hikers are surrounded by breathtaking views as they venture down the South Kaibab Trail to the bottom of Grand Canyon, crossing the Black Bridge that hovers above the Colorado River, laying on Boat Beach along the Colorado River, visiting Phantom Ranch and much more! This also is a great hike for most months of the year.  This is a great trip for the first time backpacker in good physical condition as well. But because it is one of the most popular hikes, utilizing 2 of the most popular trails in Grand Canyon - South Kaibab and Bright Angel trails, you can expect to see 100s of people over the course of your trip. Not saying you won't have some "you" time but if seclusion or a chance to experience the canyon "one on one" is your goal, there are other trips that will better suit your needs; such as Cremation Canyon or Hermit to Bright Angel

The below itinerary depicts a standard 4 day trip.  If you are looking for 3 days, take out the 2nd day of exploring and day hiking towards Ribbon Falls.

Please Note: Because the Grand Canyon South Kaibab/Bright Angel Loop backpacking trip has such high demand, it is recommended you plan this hike more than five months in advance.

South Kaibab Trail
Bright Angel Trail

Day 1

Once you arrive at the trailhead on the South Rim, you begin your hike down the South Kaibab Trail, which is 7 miles (11.3 km) and 4,800 ft (1463 m) to Bright Angel Campground.  Unwind at the campsite or grab a drink at the Phantom Ranch canteen - one of the favorite hangouts among canyon hikers. The hike down the South Kaibab Trail to the bottom takes about 5.5 hours.

Day 2

On the second day of this itinerary, there are several side hike options. The most popular choice is a 12-mile (19.3 km) round trip hike to Ribbon Falls along the North Kaibab Trail. Looking for some R & R? You are more than welcome to use this time to relax or explore the surrounding area. Either way, it is a free day from carrying your large pack.

Day 3

After a full day at the bottom of the canyon, today starts the hike to the South Rim along Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trail, reaching one of three possible camps for the night. The hike takes you 1,400 ft (426.72 m) up in elevation to camp in an area with some of the best views in the canyon. You will enjoy a stunning sunset, extensive panoramic views miles wide from the inner canyon and down to the Colorado River.

Day 4

Onward and upward!  Hiking out of the canyon is a 4.5-mile (7.24 km) hike with a 3,000-ft (914 m) increase in elevation along the Bright Angel Trail. The average hiking time to the top is 4.5 hours.

What a great day! It was a fantastic hike with Jen Hogan as our guide! We hiked and talked the whole day! Jen was great, so knowledgeable and really made our day so much fun! The view was spectacular of course. The weather perfect. We are anxious to go back someday and do another guided tour. We couldn't be more pleased with our choice of hikes and your choice of guides for us!! Thank you!!!

Im so glad I committed to this trip! Besides the obvious amazing atmosphere, I want to focus on Ryan our guide. He was amazing and I now want him to guide me and everyone I know on all excursions I plan! (Seriously if I do a raft trip, he has to guide!) He was knowledgable, patient, and an all around great dude that I could listen to forever! I honestly can't say enough about him and how awesome he was during every part of our experience! If it wasn't for your company and the trips you offer, I'm not sure I ever would have known these places truly exist for me to explore and you have solidified my love of national parks and nature in general! Thanks again but especially to Ryan!!!

This was very disappointing once in a lifetime trip.......avoid using these guys at all costs.

There were 4 of us scheduled to go on the 3 day South Kaibab to Bright Angel loop, with stops at Phantom Ranch and Indian gardens. Since 5 is the maximum number of people for a group, short of paying for the 5th spot JRI will fill that spot. This leaves you very vulnerable to who they put with you. Relying on JRI to put a hiker that at least minimally met their requirements for the hike, turned out to be a major mistake. This will be a long and thorough review.

We had originally booked with another tour company but they couldn't get the permits. JRI had them so we booked with them. There may be a reason they had them while others were already sold out. We booked about 4 months in advance.

The day before the trip you have to show up at their office for a briefing. The person they had do it, was maybe 20 and really didn't have a clue. I asked him how long is the drive to where we start the hike and he told me 5-6 hours. I knew he was wrong and based on how he conducted himself I didn't ask anymore questions. This is where you pick up your equipment. The equipment is adequate not great but it does the job.

When the person JRI booked to go with us showed up I was SHOCKED. This guy was 69 years old and never hiked before. Full disclosure here. I'm 53 the three boys I brought were 19,20 and 21 and none of us had really hiked before. But we were all in shape for this hike as required. Back to our unknown hiker. Not only was he 69 years old he looked frail and walked around slightly hunched. After watching him for 10 minutes, I talked with him and he said he didn't think he could do the hike. If you saw him, you KNEW it could NOT do the hike. I took aside the guy that did the briefing and told him my concerns. He said he would call and talk with the owners. I also called our guide (Danny) and told him of my concerns. He also said he would discuss it with the owners.

I knew after my discussion that they would cancel his trip. That didn't happen. So here is how our hike went. 20 minutes or so after the beginning of our hike, it was very obvious the old guy wouldn't make it. I talked with the guide again and he told me that if we stopped and turned the hiker back that it would end our hike. Which was terrible news, so we pressed on. So after 2 hours of hiking and the old guy falling 3 times, which was scary, the guide took his pack. We pretty much hike on our own and waited hours at each stopping point for them to catch up. This happened all the way down and all the way up. 3 days of hiking mostly on our own.

So we set up camp without the guide(who is supposed to) in the dark as we didn't reach Phantom Camp until 1 hr after dark due to waiting for the older gentleman. We didn't get to partake in the ranger talks or use the phantom ranch store as it was closed. The guide didn't fix supper either as he and the older guy arrive 2+ hours after we did. At this point it was pretty clear that this was a very serious situation for the older guy. There isn't much you can do if your not prepared and you hike to the bottom. JRI did manage to arrange to have someone hike his Backpack out, which made it possible for him to eventually hike out. Painfully slow rate of hiking.

Not the once in a lifetime hike with my sons that I had imagined and that JRI advertises.
They were warned multiple times that the guy was not capable of doing the hike. The fact that they ignored the evidence that was clearly before them (their briefing guy and their guide) and my comments leads me to this conclusion. They are more money focused than good customer experience focused.

Just Roughin it will remove bad reviews from tripadvisor, so don't believe their rating. They challenge the review based on Tripadvisor not allowing multi-day tour reviews. You'll notice they don't challenge the good reviews, so they stay on their profile

OUTSTANDING trip!

We are a family of 5 (very novice hikers-NO significant hiking or camping experience) who just finished a 3 day/2 nite trip.
It surpassed our expectations in many respects:
- The Grand Canyon IS breathtaking and needs to be experienced IN the canyon to remotely appreciate it
- JRI was as promised (and more) to include: correspondence, gear, the orientation meeting, food quality, planning, etc.
- Our guide, Kyle S., was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, respectful...top-notch.

We would highly recommend JRI and Kyle to anyone interested in a guided expedition into the Grand Canyon. Based upon our experience we can assume any trips by JRI to any of the locations they service would be excellent.

We hope to utilize JRI again someday.

Thanks.

Not for the faint of heart but a great trip. If we ever do it again we would not hesitate to use JRI again. Meals prepared by Danny our outstanding guide hit the spot. What are you waiting for? Just do it!

This was the best trip I have ever taken. I took my 13 year old and it was great to see him be a kid without electronics for 3 days. Our guide Steve was fantastic! He was well prepared, patient, a great cook, super with my son, and funny too. Having not been a camper, I really appreciated all the care and quality of the gear that was provided. The food was surprisingly good (ok, I had hot dogs in my head when thinking of camping and was pleasantly surprised by the couscous, chicken stir-fry, etc). And there's nothing better than great coffee on a crisp morning in the Grand Canyon! The pre-trip reading materials helped me be better equiped both physically and with what I needed to pack (you really don't need much). This trip completely exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to take another trip with Just Rougin' It! I think I will become a regular.

Our guide for the 4 day hike april 26 - 29, Jeremy Stapleton, was outstanding. His in depth knowledge of the canyon/trails and quiet leadership of our group made the trip a success and an absolutely fabulous experience. All 5 of us were first time Grand Canyon hikers and some of us may have skimped a bit on the training for carrying a 35 pound backpack in 80 + temperatures.
5 stars for Jeremy !

We had a wonderful time. The 3 day hike is perfect for beginners like ourselves. The hike is strenuous for beginners but not so much that it is not feasible. Our guide, Ken, did a great job in all situations. Our group had a person get dehydrated on the first day. Ken took great care of him while at the same time seeing to the rest of the groups safety. His information was educational and entertaining. He always hiked with the slower person while keeping in contact with the leader. The gear provided was a good quality. Last but not least, the food was better than I expected on a hike were all of it is packed in on the guides' back. I would recommend the trip to all my friends and family. The views were nothing short of spectacular.

We had the trip of a lifetime. Met wonderful people, laughed until our jaws hurt and saw the Grand Canyon in all its glory from top to bottom, sunrise to sunset. Everyone was blown away by the quality of the food, equipment and most importantly the guides, Ken and JP. The Grand Canyon should be on everyone's bucket list. We had an incredibly fabulous time. Can't find the words to accurately describe our experience but suffice it to say if the opportunity arises for us to do another guided tour, Just Roughin' It is on our speed dial.

I wanted to reach out with a some "Hardy Boys" feedback regarding our Grand Canyon adventure. It was an off-the-chart experience. Kudos to your team for nailing every aspect of the operation; from front end communications (thanks Kerry), your quirky and informative web site, high quality equipment, truly delicious food, and a work class guide. All - five star stuff. Do I hear an amen?

As a 59 year old guy, I knew I was in for a challenge. I hiked the canyon as a young guy and really wanted my 15 year old son, Sam, to experience it too. We came to you hoping for the support we needed to have a really memorable trip.

From the git go our guide, Zach demonstrated the highest level of competence in every aspect of the trip. Hike prep, backpack and hiking tips, camp/tent set-up, and meal prep was all invisibly handled with ease.

The magic of the trip was Zach's willingness to fully present with us. He was aware and receptive of how to give each of us what we needed. He maintained a watchful eye, but provided the elbow room Sam needed to experience the canyon. The Ribbon Falls hike up the North Kaibab was a hit!

I knew the hike would be a stretch for me. In reality, it was more than a stretch. I am grateful for Zach's patience and support. He never gave unsolicited support or cheerleading. Just rock steady presence. He lightened the load physically and mentally by giving me the space and time I needed to walk out of that big hole. I deeply grateful for his authenticity, patience, and commitment to me. On top of that we had some great laughs and a lot of fun.

....... So hikers find a big pot and add some sore legs, bruised toes, sweaty shirts, awesome photos, big laughs, and great memories........stir 'em up and you've got yourself a little "Just Roughin' It 1% stew"

Just Roughin' It; I will sing your praises - you've got a great operation. Zach - take a bow - you are the man!

Keep your socks dry,

I will start by saying that as a father and grandfather in our threesome I was very pleased, and so were the wives and mom, to have a guide trained in medical aid as well as proficient in wilderness guiding. We reviewed your recommendations on the web site and prepared as recommended. Our trip was exceptional in many aspects. We enjoyed Ken and Lauree who we were teamed up with, We had time to stop as often as we needed or to forge ahead as we wished. The scenery was so very grand an majestic and we had time to enjoy it. Nights were cool and days were comfortable, I liked Jeremy's (the guide) good council when asked and his giving points of interest as well as his experiences as we walked and talked. The special side trip to plateau point and dinner as the sun set is impossible to describe. The gear was second to none. We were warm at night with the nice sleeping bags that had air mattresses in them and the tents that were compact enough to not weigh the backpacks down too much. The backpacks were comfortable and top quality and, with Jeremy's help and adjustment, fit perfectly. Jeremy did and awesome job with the food. I thought the food might be a bit of a struggle however again we were pleasantly surprised not only by the taste and quality but also the presentation. The campground settings were so picturesque with flowering trees, water and clean toilets and deer and mules passing by from time to time. We will have such a great time reviewing pictures and talking about this adventure with family and loved ones. Thanks for everything. Thanks for the help in handing a legacy on to the kids and grand kids of poppa who hiked the Grand Canyon with them.
