Half Dome/Little Yosemite Valley
The routes leading to Half Dome to present options for every type of hiker and as an out and back trail, you can decide how much you want to hike and you will still see so much of what the area has to offer. Hike to waterfalls, views, a valley and of course - Half Dome! Hike the legenary John Muir Trail to the top of Nevada Falls (7 miles round trip), or take a shorter hike (5.4 miles to the top of Vernal Falls). For the hiker looking for the ultimate challenge, summit Half Dome.* But, be prepared to put 14 miles under your belt with a 4,800ft change in elevation.
*NOTE: Hikes to the top of Half Dome require a permit obtained from the National Park Service. These permits must be acquired before booking a hike and are not provided by Just Roughin' It.
Arguably, some of the best views of Yosemite Valley are along the Yosemite Falls trail. Hike to the top of the tallest waterfall in the continental United States and the fourth tallest in the world. Travel 3.6 miles to the top of the falls or 4.2 to Yosemite Point for some amazing views of Yosemite Valley below and Half Dome across the valley floor! Even if you don't hike to the top, you will still have a chance to revel in the beauty of the area. Remember, what goes up, must come down so don't forget to double up these listed mileages.
Hike to one of the most assessible lakes in the Yosemite. This 12.4 mile hike is long, but since it starts along Glacier Point road, you only have to climb 1,500ft to get some amazing views and swim in a crisp, cold, high mountain lake.
Chilnualna Falls (Wawona)
Yosemite is a big park, but the majority of visitors make their way into Yosemite Valley. Stay away from the larger crowds and hike in the southern portion of the park. There are plenty of hiking opportunities from meadows to the largest waterfall outside Yosemite Valley - Chilnualna Falls. This 10 mile round trip hike will take you to the top of the falls (gaining 2,300ft in elevation) to some great swimming holes along Chilnuana Creek. Or take a hike to Alder Falls through meadows and along Alder Creek, 2 miles shorter and 1,300ft lower.
Start your hike from the upper reaches of Yosemite in Tuolumne Meadows. From 8,600ft, you will hike 3.4 miles to Cathedral Lakes. Want something a bit lighter? Hike to Lower Cathedral Lake and gain about 800ft or hike to Upper Cathedral Lake at 9,600ft for more of a challenge.
