Grand Canyon Rim to Rim

A Just Roughin' It Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike is one of the most popular backpacking trips we, and the Grand Canyon, have to offer!  It is also the most used route to become a member of the Just Roughin' It Mile Deep Club! And because we believe in the great reward of doing it all yourself, we don't offer mule support or Phantom Ranch lodging.  It's all about doing more and seeing more!

A Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike allows you to experience breathtaking views and the vast expanse of the canyon. There are few experiences more spectacular than seeing both the North and the South Rims at the same time from the bottom of the canyon.  This Grand Canyon hiking tour has you backpacking from over 8,000ft in elevation from the North Rim to the almost 7,000 ft South Rim.  Along the North Kaibab trail (pronounced KY-bab where KY rhymes with Eye and bab rhymes with cab) we will pass a couple waterfalls (Roaring Springs and Ribbon Falls), hike along Bright Angel Creek, visit Phantom Ranch, dip your toes in the Colorado River and see evidence of ancient civilizations that once called Grand Canyon their home.

Since the road to access the North Rim does not open until May 15th of every year and is closed through the winter months, there is a small window of opportunity each year to complete a Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike.  This trip is great for the first time backpacker that has an above average level of fitness. You are hiking the main trails of the canyon where there are amenities at most campsites such as toilets, running water and even a canteen at Phantom Ranch where you can buy a lemonade or a Snickers bar!  These trails are also well maintained and considerably wider than most other trails in the canyon - over 6 feet wide in most places.*  Plus, the Rim to Rim hiking trip is one of the two trips we will run in the summer months (June through August) since there is ample shade, water and creeks to stay cool and hydrated.

**Spoiler Alert** If you are looking to experience Grand Canyon and all its amazingness without 100s of people, this is NOT the trip for you. You will be on the trails with 100s of other hikers - especially during the peak months of May, September and through mid October. Plus, Bright Angel camp and Phantom Ranch can cater to 200 people per night.  If you want a Rim to Rim trip with a little "you" time, check out our Bass Rim to Rim trip or let us know and we can have you stay at some alternate and less crowded camp areas. Popularity + amenities = lots of people!

*Please note: Due to the high demand and limited supply of permits available for the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim camping areas, a camping area that is an acceptable alternative as approved by the National Park Service may be utilized, varying the route and difficulty of the route.  The trails hiked will remain as detailed in the itinerary for at least 80% of the trip. Because this hiking tour has such high demand, we recommend reserving this hike at least five months in advance. If you would prefer a hike from the South to the North Rim, we can do that too. Contact us for more details. Due to extreme temperatures in Grand Canyon June through August, the 3-Day Rim to Rim is not an option.

North Kaibab Trail

Bright Angel Trail
Day 1

Let the adventure begin! Today we’re off to the North Rim of Grand Canyon. The drive is about 6 hours from our pick up location in North Scottsdale. From the trailhead, we hike 7 miles (11.26 kilometers) and 4,200 feet (1280 meters) down to Cottonwood Campground. Jump into Bright Angel Creek to cool down or wander along the shore for a relaxing evening. Our average time to reach Cottonwood camp is 5 hours.

Day 2

After breakfast, we follow Bright Angel Creek another 7 miles (11.26 kilometers) and 1,500 feet (457.2 meters) down to Bright Angel Camp.  On the way, we divert off the main trail for a side hike to Ribbon Falls – a 100 foot water fall that spews out of a side canyon. Bright Angel camp is nestled between the Colorado River and Bright Angel Creek. We usually take 4.5 to 5 hours to reach Bright Angel Camp, including the time to hike to Ribbon Falls.

Day 3

After the gear is packed, we start the hike out of the canyon along Bright Angel or South Kaibab Trail, reaching one of three possible camps for the night. The hike takes us 1,400 ft (426.72 m) up in elevation to either a secluded camp with open skies or not so secluded along the main trail. Either way, you will enjoy a stunning sunset, extensive panoramic views miles wide from the inner canyon and down to the Colorado River.

Day 4

Up, up and away! Today there is a 3,000 ft (914.4 m) increase in elevation. This hike takes the average group 4.5 hours to complete, which has us reaching the Grand Canyon's South Rim. You should have a couple hours to grab a bite to eat, souvenir shop and hang out with all the bus tourists before heading back to Scottsdale at 1:30pm.  We arrive in North Scottsdale at about 5:30pm.

I took my 12 & 16 yr. old grandkids on the 4-day R2R Oct 9-12, which included 2 other hikers, middle-aged like me. Jon was a tremendous guide, always ready, able & well-versed in the prime routes and best campsites, and kept a great humor & disposition throughout. Apart from carrying too much weight (my fault for bringing too much stuff), the difficulty level was at times challenging, but nothing to fear. Good shoes, broken-in but with lots of tread, and endurance training are key. It really is true that you don't need much in the way of changes of clothes - really! Eliminate that extra weight, and save yourself a lot of grief & pain!

The vistas were gorgeous, the side trips well worth it even after a day's tough hike. The pacing on the 4 day trip is well-planned, though day 1 is long and tough because of the long drive, late start, and carrying maximum weight (added food). But there are some relatively easy days, arriving at camp/finishing by noon on days 3 & 4.

Finally, a couple of minor complaints. First, I found the sleeping bag pad too thin, so I suggest JRI improve on that. Had I known, I'd have brought a thicker pad or air mattress. Also, one of the meals - a freeze-dried beef stroganoff - tasted good, but we were told as we finished the meal that, ahem, it would have a powerful effect on us. Two days later, a couple of us were still running back and forth to the bathroom. Come on JRI, surely you can find a substitute!

Thank you JRI, Jon and our great van drivers, for a wonderful overall trip!

I went on the R2R hike in mid-October. The weather was perfect and overall the trip was a success. We enjoyed 4 days of hiking with mixed abilities in our group. Each hiker was able to go at their pace and we never felt pressured to do otherwise. Our guide was very hands on and willing to help out in any way. He was also very knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. It was nice having someone who knew the canyon like the back of his hand. We all enjoyed visiting spots we otherwise may have missed if we did not have a guide (Ribbon Falls, Plateau Point). My only complaint was the food provided. I felt pretty much all meals were "junk" food and I don't typically eat poorly. Fortunately, I brought a lot of my own snacks so I was prepared, but I think it would be nice to know in advance what to expect from the food.

Trip was very well planned. Van transportation great idea, 7 adults in a ford explorer very cramped, and 3 stops on way out seemed excessive. Arrived at site quite late and set up in dark, rain. Jon was a great guide, knew his stuff, routes, and when to hike to avoid the heat. But his snoring kept us all up at night, even the neighbors! Equiptment was awesome, even for someone like me, inexperienced with set ups, and a single. All over I'd give you almost 5 stars. Trip of a lifetime.

Mary (54 years old) and Nate (18 years old) did a rim to rim trip in early June to celebrate Nate's high school graduation. Our guide Liz was wonderful -- patient, competent and interesting. The heat and difficulty definitely made it tough but it was really rewarding and memorable.

One month ago today I set out on a 4-day rim-rim hike which turned out to be one of the best trips ever. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants a challenge and time off the grid. Our group was great - I didn't know any of them and this was a first time backpacking trip for me. By the end, our group became a family, with Michael as our fearless leader. I'd like to try Yosemite next year. I'd encourage anyone who doesn't hike a lot to get a good training program going well before the hike- see the Intermediate Backpack training program in The Outdoor Athlete by Schurman.

This was a first backpacking trip for my boyfriend, Bob, and me (both of us in our mid-60's). In addition to being in awe of the grandeur of the Grand Canyon itself, it was a strenuous challenge for both of us, and finishing this hike is an accomplishment of which we are both very proud. Our guide, Michael Blaylock, was incredibly helpful, supportive and patient, and played a major part in helping us succeed in this endeavor. His individual attention to my wavering confidence is what got me through the toughest time as I faltered. We recommend without reserve, the JRI Rim to Rim hike, especially if Michael is your guide!

To the Just Roughinit team

Thank you so much for an amazing Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Hiking experience! Michael and I agree that this was one of our best holidays! The views of the canyon were incredible! Hiking over the 4 days, down one side and up the other, gave us lots of opportunity to enjoy the changing landscape. The trip was a good balance of hiking and time for relaxing. We were surprised at how green and tropical the canyon was along the streams. But what really amazed us was the stars! The night sky was beautiful! Our guide Danny was awesome! We have never backpacked before, so having an experienced guide was very comforting. Danny patiently answered our many questions about the trail and what to expect. It was a real treat having someone cook and clean and this made for a really great camping experience! We were impressed by the quality of the equipment - our backpacks were comfortable and the tent and sleeping bags were lightweight. Our old bodies found the sleeping pads a little too thin. Overall we felt well prepared for the trip and pass on our thanks to Ray and the great info on the Website. The cooling collar we purchased the day before the trip worked really well - I am so glad I picked one up! Thanks again for an amazing trip! We will recommend your company to our friends!

We had a great time on our adventure through the Grand Canyon with our trusted guide Dexter. The hike was more difficult than expected for all four of us old timers. The first day was tough but we soon got used to our backpacks. Proper fit was very important. By the time we climbed out of the canyon on the fourth day we felt like experienced hikers. A special thanks to Dexter for all of his expert advice and interesting information he shared with us. Can't wait for our next exciting adventure!

Just Roughin It is the example of what a trekking organization should be. Individually and as a company they are professional and well organized. JRI proved more than willing and capable of handling our personal needs and exceeding our greatest expectations.
Following a year of planning with another company, I suffered a severe injury to my shoulder. The previous company was unable to accommodate us in any way, however from the first contact, Just Roughin It was enthusiastic to meet the challenge. They made our trip not only possible and successful, but truly enjoyable. They quickly adapted to my situation and provided me, my wife, and our 11 year old son with the experience of a lifetime.
The guides, Michael and Tara, as well as Dave, (one of the solutions to my injury limitation) were at all times very personable, flexible, knowledgeable, and capable of handling every facet of our adventure. In the words of our son: “They were awesome!” “Awesome” is a great way to describe Just Roughin It as a whole. We are grateful for the experience and JRI.

May 27-30 two of my best friends and I (fondly referred to as Seal Team 60) did the RtR. JRI did a fantastic job all the way around and our guide, Nicholas Glover went above and beyond, in taking care of us and the rest of our party. This is our third trip with JRI and I would highly recommend the organization and Nicholas Glover!

To Keri Van Dyke and the Just Roughin' It crew:

Just wanted to take a moment to express my profound gratitude to Just Roughin’ It for the amazing Rim to Rim hike I participated in from May 31 to June 3. It was truly invigorating to descend below the rim, experience the wonders of nature - the beauty and the hostility - and come out alive and well four days later.

Our guide, Ken Parker was a great leader. An experienced naturalist and back packer, he made our journey educational, informative, and comfortable. He handled both the good times and the challenging times with effortless professionalism. He also passed on several clever tips to make back packing easier.

My favorite times were seeing the canyon light up at dawn from Cottonwood campground, and having a sunrise breakfast at three mile rest house.

A lot of planning went into the selection of gear, supplies, food preparation and everything else it took to get us from one rim to the other over the four days in such an elegant fashion. It all worked out splendidly, and I could not have done it without Just Roughin’ It!

I was fortunate to participate in the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Tour, Our guide was Ryan Bee. He was patient, supportive and knowledgable. This was my first hiking trip and I now have a new passion! I learned a lot about the canyon history from Ryan. He also taught me all about hiking and camping. Great experience!

What is important to know is that if you are a novice hiker, you can do this. However, you need to be prepared for the trip - hiking with your new boots on, core exercises, full body strength and stamina. It was very hot in the canyon but if you are in shape, there is plenty of food and water with the Just Roughin It team.

I highly recommend this trip and the company. I am looking at another trip for next year. I am hooked!

We had a fantastic trip. Really enjoyed the scenery, and impressed with the organisation. In particular - all plans seemed to come together as described, equipment was fine, good quality and "worked." I was especially impressed with Ryan Williams - capable, engaging, experienced, hard-working, informative and the list could go on!

I thought the group size was just right, and that it all went very well, leaving us with amazing memories, and a desire to return as soon as funds allow!!

My only minor concern is a cultural one, and I'm not sure how you can address it - with a New Zealand background we are not used to the concept of such generous tipping, and without a discreet conversation with someone else on the trail would not have considered this. I have since found that there is an article on your website relating to this but being not so well prepared I hadn't really taken that in. So personally I would have preferred any service charge to have been included in the original price. But I recognise that most people are aware of tipping, it's just us antipodeans that are different.

In summary a great time with a great guide, and I will be recommending your organisation to anyone considering this adventure. Many thanks.

I have to say, the Rim to Rim hike was one of the best experiences of my life. Obviously the landscape was unbelievable. Craig was amazing, full of great information, and very helpful, nice, funny... The food was very good, much better than I expected for a backpacking trip - Craig cooked, cleaned and made sure we enjoyed every minute of our trip. The gear was good, no complaints there. I'm very glad your website stresses training for the hike - I don't think it would have been nearly as enjoyable if I had not worked hard before going.

All in all I would recommend this trip, and Just Roughin' It, to anyone - and I have been!

We had an amazing time!!! Jonathan was fabulous!! The only problem we had was when a rattlesnake made its way into one of our tents because the zipper was broken from the get-go. No worries though, no one was in the tent and it made its way safely back out. Thank you for everything!!

Overall great trip and we were glad we did it and would recommend to others. Specific comments:

Need a bigger vehicle for pick-up and drop-off. Having 3 adults jammed in the back seat with luggage and the seats lean towards the middle for 7 hours was awful.

Our guide was terrific. He was knowledgeable and was very safety conscious when one of the hikers had to back out 1 hours into the hike.

I don't know how to avoid it but it was a bummer to sit on the trail for 3 hours waiting for our guide to get back hiking the sick party back up to the top.

The food was ok, gear was good.

My wife got dehydrated on day 2. While our guide told everyone to drink my wife and I had never hiked and we didn't bother to drink much water...She though she wasn't going to make ot out but our guide got her to drink a lot during the evening and made it out well on day 3. One idea is to scream every 30 minutes so people "learn" to drink water all the time...

Drive back was great.

Thanks

Fantastic! Awesome! Incredible!...The number of adjectives to describe this trip are infinite. This adventure was my favorite so far out of close to fifty vacations ranging from skiing in Canada, fishing in Wisconsin, snorkeling in Mexico, hiking a 14er in Colorado, and rock climbing in Yosemite. I have never felt so exhilarated or proud after a vacation. I must admit that I was nervous about the challenge that I was about to face, but having such a compassionate guide eased the stress and made the trip that much more enjoyable. Zach (our guide) had a great sense of humor, knew how to rid our aching feet of blisters, cooked delicious meals, and was patient with the pace of hiking. I truly believe that having such a fun guide was prevalent in making the trip fulfilling. If I were to hike the Grand Canyon again, (which I plan to) I would definitely use 'Just Roughin' It' since it is so organized, had a great 'bag of treats', had comfy accommodations, allowed guests to hike at their own speed, and made my 'Bucket List' item a fantastic reality.

I do have two simple suggestions. Check the tent zippers, as both tents had to remain open due to malfunction. Also, I believe a kids pack would have been more appropriate for me since I am so short. When I tilted my head back it would hit the stiff part of of the pack, which did result in some frustration. Maybe there is a way to have your guests measure their back so a good fitting pack would be more comfortable.

I do not want the suggestions to override what i memorable time I had. I am thrilled with the trip and when plans are in the making to hike another trail, I will not hesitate to contact 'Just Roughin' It.!!

I thought the Rim to Rim hike led by Steve was great. I would recommend Steve as a guide to anyone. He was so knowledgeable about the history and topography of the canyon. He was an amazing cook, and he had a great personality for leading this type of trip. The gear was fine. The canyon speaks for itself!!!

My biggest problem was with myself. The weight of my pack was a bit much for me the first couple of days. My pack was digging into my shoulders. It helped when I tightened it around my hips, still the weight was a bit much for me. I brought extra snacks with me because a friend of mine who had been on the same trip last May had told me that he felt there wasn't enough food. Of course different people eat different amounts of food, and the food that JRI provided, including the snacks was plenty for me. I didn't carry more than JRI provided. So if I were to do this trip again, I'd leave behind any extra weight I could. Steve was very helpful and carried my tent on the third and fourth day and one of the trip participants carried my snack pack on the third and forth day. Just a reduction of about four pounds helped me tremendously.

I have been wanting to do the Rim to Rim trip since I hiked down to Phantom Ranch from the South Rim twice in 2002. This Rim to Rim trip met my expectations.

Thank you for helping me reach my goal! I would recommend "Just Roughin' It" to anyone interested in such a trip.

I wish I could SING all the good things that I experienced with your company, Just Roughin' It. Steve was a wonderful guide, gave us so much historical information along the trip (not much the first two days since it was raining and everyone was watching the trail. The meals were excellent, even in the most difficult situation, he was positive, very helpful, and made us very comfortable. The next two days with the sun shining made the trip so much more pleasant. Steve gave us the opportunity to see some special sites, my favorite was the hike to Plateau Point. We were so happy the weather cooperated that day.

My son Chris is an experienced camper and he found the equipment being provided by your company top quality. The Grand Canyon is a wonderful World Wonder and Chris and I were so lucky to have seen and experienced this adventure, thanks to your company.

Robert and I had a great time and have finally recovered!! We were impressed with the service, food and Jeremy Stapleton. It was the hardest thing we have ever done physically but so pumped up that we did it!

This is what I put on Facebook:

Things I learned while on the Grand Canyon Hike:
1. Hiking sticks are your best friend!
2. Better to remember how for you've come than how far you have to go!
3. Pack way less than you need!
4. One foot in front of the other gets you to the top!
5. The feeling of accomplishment is amazing!

Thanks again!!! :-)

Overall the trip was excellent. Steve Klestad deserves tremendous credit in providing outstanding leadership guidance and service. We had a diversity of ages and abilities and Steve managed to meet everyone at their level and encourage the group in a very positive way. My 14 year old daughter peppered Steve with questions, and patiently and thoughtfully Steve answered every one. I appreciated the organization, comfortable transportation, and friendly and prompt drivers. The food was great and very pleasantly surprised by the EXCELLENT coffee!

I am glad we arrived in Flagstaff the night before, as the 4:30am pick up in Phoenix on the first day would have been a little rough. I will definitely be looking to do another trip with Just Roughin' It.

My husband, my mom and I went on this trip two years ago. Our guide was James. Let me just say it was the best trip ever! For our first time in the Grand Canyon, we were not sure how to prepare for it, so we decided to go with an adventure company and this was the right choice. The gear was top notch, pace was just right, and our guide was wonderful. We didn't have to worry about a thing. I would recommend Just Roughin' It to anyone, without a doubt. As for the trail itself, we loved it: it was the perfect comparison/contrast of North and South Rims, was quite peaceful until higher altitudes of South Rim, and had breathtaking views. Huge sense of accomplishment and desire to return. Thank you JRI and James.
