Other Grand Canyon Backpacking

Cremation Creek Hike
This lesser known and easily accessible area of the canyon will get you away from the crowds, but is still just a short hike away from Phantom Ranch and the Colorado River. Hike down the South Kaibab Trail, then along the Tonto Trail, where you will see Anasazi ruins within this small oasis.

Spend a couple nights here or add a night at Cremation Creek to any South Kaibab/Bright Angel Loop.

Tanner Trail - Experienced Only
This 18-mile/28.8-km roundtrip natural rim to river trail was used by native tribes of the Grand Canyon for several thousand years. This trail was also known as the infamous Horse Thief Route.

This unmaintained trail is one of the most difficult hikes in the park and is perfect for the experienced hiker or backpacker looking for primitive adventure. Like many hikes in the Grand Canyon, this trail can be looped with the Tonto Trail.

New Hance Trail - Very Experienced Only
This is a 20-mile/32.4-km roundtrip hike along a steep - yet rewarding - backpacking trip. The trail was built right next to the "Old Hance Trail," constructed by the first European Americans to settle the Grand Canyon in 1883. It was originally created for mining, but quickly became a trail used for the tourist trade.

The New Hance Trail is very steep and recommended for very experienced hikers. Like many hikes in the Grand Canyon, this trail can be looped with the Tonto Trail.
