We were born to be wild." - Steppenwolf
Think Arizona is all about deserts? Think again. Evergreen forests, natural creeks, herds of elk: that's Arizona's high country.
Let us take you on a hike through the Mogollon Rim (pronounced Mug-ee-own) - a series of escarpments that define the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Sharp cliffs and deep canyons carve through a thick ponderosa pine forest. It's a cool escape - especially during the summer months - and lakes are scattered throughout the area, which make great spots for overnight stays. The Mogollon Rim is also home to the nation's highest concentration of ponderosa pines.
Payson is one of the closest cities (just over 15,000 in population) to the Rim. Also known for its cool comforts, there are many hikes around the small town that show splendor of high country, and it's only two hours from Phoenix. It's perfect for those who don't want to venture too far into unknown territory.
